WOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) — A private junior and senior high school in Woonsocket has laid off more than a dozen teachers.

The Woonsocket Call reports the layoff notices went out to teachers at Mount Saint Charles Academy at the end of the school year.

School President Herve Richer declined to say how many teachers were let go, but told the newspaper the layoffs were a result of declining enrollment.

He says the school has 200 fewer students than it did six years ago and therefore needed to reduce its staff.

According to its website, the Catholic preparatory school, which was founded in 1924, has about 700 students.
