PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Roman Catholics in Providence are celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul.
The cathedral was consecrated on June 30, 1889.
Bishop Thomas Tobin will celebrate a special Mass on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the cathedral to mark the anniversary. Bishop Salvatore Matano from the Diocese of Rochester, New York and Bishop Daniel Reilly, the former bishop of the Diocese of Worcester, Massachusetts also are expected to attend.
The Mass will include a papal blessing that will be presented to Monsignor Anthony Mancini, the cathedral rector.
The 1,500-seat cathedral recently underwent a $1.2 million renovation, which included new lighting, repairs to its Munich stained glass windows and a newly restored organ that is one of the largest of its kind in North America.
