Providence Considers Ban on Smoking in Parks

NewsRadio 920 WHJJ and the Associated Press

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Providence City Council is considering a ban on smoking in all public parks.

If it's approved, it would be illegal to use any tobacco product in any city-owned park, playground or recreation area. Violations would be punishable by a $50 fine.

Council President Michael Solomon says Tuesday that prohibiting the use of tobacco will reduce the amount of exposure children have to nicotine and secondhand smoke.

The ordinance was introduced at last week's council meeting. The Committee on Ordinances will now take it up.

The board of park commissioners supports the policy of tobacco-free parks and recommended it be adopted by the city. Mayor Angel Taveras also supports it.
