PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The city of Providence is getting $150,000 in federal funding for efforts to reduce gun and gang violence.

The grant is being formally announced Thursday morning by Rhode Island's U.S. senators, Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and state and local law enforcement. It is through the Project Safe Neighborhoods Program.

Officials say the grant will support a partnership of the Providence Police Department and state police, the U.S. attorney and state attorney general's offices, the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence, and Roger Williams University's School of Justice Studies. The aim is to boost the ability of city police to focus on gang violence and gun crime reduction.

Providence is one of 16 communities in the U.S. to get Project Safe Neighborhoods money this year.
