PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Providence man has been held in federal custody for allegedly taking a teenager from Massachusetts across state lines for prostitution.
Kemont Bowie appeared in U.S. District Court Tuesday. The 33-year-old is charged with one count each of sex trafficking of a child and transportation of a minor. The 17-year-old girl was located Monday at a Pawtucket residence by law enforcement.
According to court papers the teenager was allegedly taken against her will from South Station in Boston on Aug. 18 and driven to Rhode Island, where she was being taught how to be a prostitute. The criminal complaint says she escaped and called for help.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 2.
A lawyer for Bowie could not immediately be reached for comment. The investigation is ongoing.
