PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Providence police have confirmed that a suspect fatally shot in a weekend gun battle was shot by an officer

Police Chief Hugh Clements on Monday identified the man who was killed as 18-year-old Douglas Cooper.

Clements said three undercover narcotics officers encountered a group of people involved in a gunfight on Saturday night between 10:30 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. on Saturday.

He said Cooper turned from the original fight and fired at the officers. Two of them returned fire. Clements said the two officers are on administrative leave during an investigation of the shooting, as is protocol.

He said other suspects from the street fight are being sought.
