PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The mayor of Providence is vowing to aggressively repair potholes caused by this winter's snowstorms.
Mayor Angel Taveras said Monday the potholes are the worst he can recall in many years. He encouraged residents to report potholes to the city so they can be repaired.
Five city crews were on pothole duty Monday. Holes on main roads are getting priority.
The city says winter potholes are caused as melting water from snow and ice works its way through road surfaces. Fluctuating temperatures cause the water to repeatedly freeze and thaw, expanding cracks and fissures into potholes.
