Reed to Discuss Ways to Fight Tick-Borne Illness

WARWICK, R.I. (AP) _ U.S. Sen. Jack Reed is reminding Rhode Islanders to stay safe from ticks as warmer weather approaches.
The Democrat will join tick experts Monday at Goddard Memorial State Park to highlight ways to prevent tick bites and tick-borne infections.
Thomas Mather, a University of Rhode Island professor and director of the university's Center for Vector-Borne Disease, will also speak at Monday's event.
Surveys conducted by Mather's center have found that the number of ticks in Rhode Island last year was up over past years.
Ticks can infect people with diseases including Lyme disease and babesiosis.
