WOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) _ Democratic State Rep. Lisa Baldelli-Hunt says she's running for mayor of Woonsocket in this year's election and pledges to solve the city's budget problems.
She announced her candidacy Tuesday, saying residents want improvements in the budget, schools and the local business environment.
Mayor Leo Fontaine has said he plans to run for a third term.
Woonsocket faces a $15 million budget deficit this fiscal year and plans to cut the red ink with extra taxes and reductions to city workers' benefits.
Baldelli-Hunt has been a state representative since 2007. Her uncle, Charles Baldelli, was Woonsocket's mayor in the mid-1980s and also served as a state lawmaker. Her nephew, Rocco Baldelli, was a pro baseball outfielder who retired in 2010 after playing for the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays.
