PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — More than 8,000 people were in attendance as Rhode Island College held its 160th commencement.

The school says it awarded 1,374 undergraduate degrees during Saturday's ceremonies.

Valerie Tutson, a founding member of Rhode Island Black Storytellers, told graduates in her commencement address to follow their dreams.

Among those receiving honorary degrees was 100-year-old Irene Kenny of Narragansett, a member of RIC's class of 1935 who went on to be an elementary school teacher for 40 years.

U.S. Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and U.S Reps. James Langevin and David Cicilline were among those attending the commencement.
