PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The work to find an alternative to the new toll on the Sakonnet River Bridge is continuing.

A legislative commission created to find possible alternatives to the toll is scheduled to meet Wednesday at the Statehouse.

The General Assembly created the commission after residents in the East Bay protested plans for a toll on the new span, which connects Tiverton and Portsmouth.

Lawmakers capped the toll at 10 cents until next spring to provide the commission with time to research alternatives. The toll is likely to increase next year if no other way of raising revenue for bridge maintenance is found.
