PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Gay marriage is now the law in Rhode Island.
The state's new marriage law took effect Thursday and the first same-sex marriage licenses are set to be issued at 8:30 a.m. when town and city halls open.
Some couples plan to mark the day's significance by getting married on the first day they legally can.
Federico Santi and John Gacher have been together for 41 years and own an antiques shop in Newport. The couple plans to convert their civil union into a marriage Thursday morning at Newport City Hall.
Rhode Island is the last state in New England to allow gay marriage.
A new same-sex marriage law in Minnesota also takes effect Thursday, bringing the number of states allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry to 13.
