RI House speaker submits formal resignation letter

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox has formally notified Secretary of State Ralph Mollis of his resignation from his leadership position.

Mollis's office received Fox's resignation letter on Monday, two days after the Providence Democrat announced that he was stepping down as speaker and would not seek another term as a representative.

Federal and state authorities raided Fox's Statehouse office and his Providence home Friday. Officials have not detailed who or what is being investigated.

The letter from Fox was also sent to the clerk of the House of Representatives.

Lawmakers are expected to vote on a new speaker Tuesday. House Majority Leader Nicholas Mattiello of Cranston and Rep. Michael Marcello of Scituate are both seeking the office. Both men are Democrats.
