TIVERTON, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island lawmakers are continuing their review of possible alternatives to a new toll on the Sakonnet River Bridge.

A commission set up to study the issue is scheduled to hold its next meeting Wednesday at the Statehouse.

The General Assembly created the commission after residents in the East Bay protested plans for a toll on the new span, which connects Tiverton and Portsmouth.

Lawmakers capped the toll at 10 cents until next spring to provide the commission with time to research alternatives. The toll is likely to increase next year if no other way of raising revenue for bridge maintenance is found.
