RI panel to review sales taxes paid by businesses

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Businesses in Rhode Island pay nearly as much in sales taxes as do individuals, and a special task force wants to know what impact that has on the state's economy.

The sales tax commission is set to meet Tuesday at the Statehouse.

The commission was formed after a lawmaker called for the repeal of the 7 percent tax. While that idea is unlikely to pass, lawmakers say it's time for a broader look at ways to make the tax less of a burden on consumers and businesses.

Tuesday's agenda includes a discussion of how much sales taxes cost businesses buying goods from other businesses.

The commission includes lawmakers and business owners.
