PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island lawmakers are looking at a plan that would increase vehicle inspection fees to raise money for bridge repairs as an alternative to a plan to impose tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge.
The Senate Finance Committee reviewed the proposal Thursday. It would increase the biannual inspection fees from $39 to $65.
Many East Bay residents and businesses oppose the tolls on the new Sakonnet River span, saying they will pose a financial hardship. The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority says they are needed to pay for maintenance.
Sen. Louis DiPalma says the proposal would ensure there's enough money to maintain bridges without imposing a burdensome toll.
RITBA is in the process of installing tolls on the bridge. They're expected to be in effect starting next month.
