PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ In an attempt to stay ahead of illicit drug chemists, the Rhode Island Senate is set to vote on a proposal to broadly ban synthetic recreational chemicals sold as fake marijuana and bath salts.
Supporters say existing bans on synthetic pot and bath salts don't go far enough because chemists can make small changes to their formulations to circumvent the law.
The proposal up for a vote Wednesday evening would ban entire classes of compounds to outlaw chemical formulations that haven't even been invented yet.
Both types of drugs have been linked to thousands of emergency room visits around the country. Three Rhode Island men died last year after using bath salts.
The House has already passed similar legislation.
