Providence R.I (AP) — A large Christmas tree has arrived at the Rhode Island Statehouse just in time for the holidays.
This year's tree is a 17-foot-tall Colorado blue spruce. It was donated by Sal and Nancy DeFazio, of Cranston R.I
Gov. Lincoln Chafee faced harsh criticism in the last two years after he called the tree a "holiday" tree, a name that he said respected the religious diversity of the state and its founding as a beacon of religious tolerance. Even though previous governors had used the same term, Chafee's terminology upset some critics who said he was disrespecting Christmas.
Two years ago, a group of disruptive protesters crashed the Statehouse tree lighting ceremony to voice their displeasure with Chafee.
Plans for this year's tree lighting have not yet been announced
