PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A teenager has pleaded guilty to his role in a shooting that killed a 12-year-old girl and injured three women at a graduation party in Providence last year.

Nineteen-year-old Angel Valerio pleaded to assault and conspiracy charges Thursday in Providence Superior Court and faces up to 13 years in prison. Prosecutors agreed to drop murder and firearms charges.

Valerio and four other men were arrested in the June 2013 shooting at the Hartford Park housing complex. Sixth-grader Aynis Vargas was killed and three women were wounded at the outdoor party.

Police say Valerio and the other defendants were trying to retaliate against rival gang members, and the shooting victims were innocent bystanders.

Authorities say 22-year-old Branden Castro was the shooter. He's detained without bail on murder and assault charges.
