NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Fort Adams State Park isn't just a music venue for folkies and jazz aficionados any more.
The 19th-century military installation overlooking Narragansett Bay served host to the first in a series of classic rock shows over the weekend.
"Newport Rocks the Fort" is run by the Fort Adam Trust.
Executive Director Rick Nagele tells the Newport Daily News the concerts are designed to help raise money for the fort's upkeep, and raise the fort's profile.
John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band headlined the show Sunday. Another rock concert is planned in late Augest.
The Fort plays host annually to the Newport Folk Festival and the Newport Jazz Festival. The Folk Festival opens July 25th. The Jazz Festival is the following weekend.
