NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — U.S. Sen. John McCain told naval officers in Rhode Island that the nation's greatest leaders have rallied the nation to play the role in the world that only America can.

He said that is what the nation needs now, more than ever.

The Arizona Republican spoke on the Senate floor Thursday morning about the resurgence of militants in Iraq before traveling to the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. He said everyone on the national security team should be replaced, including the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In Newport, McCain spoke of the conflicts in Iraq, Syria and Ukraine. He said America cannot afford to be disengaged because it has by far, the most to lose. About 1,000 people attended his talk on America's global leadership.
