Senate approves hike in minimum wage to $9

NewsRadio 920 WHJJ and the Associated Press

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Senate has approved legislation that would raise Rhode Island's minimum wage by $1 an hour.

The bill approved Wednesday would increase the minimum wage to $9 beginning in January. An amendment that would have raised the minimum wage to $8.25 an hour instead was defeated.

A spokesman for Speaker Nicholas Mattiello says the House plans to pass companion legislation.

The proposed House budget includes a provision that would prevent municipalities from setting their own minimum wage standards. That's a reaction to a pending ordinance in Providence to hike the wage to $15 an hour for hotel workers.

Mattiello's spokesman says having different rates would pit municipalities against each other and adversely impact the business community overall.
