PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island Speaker Nicholas Mattiello has named a new leader for the House oversight panel that's been looking into the 38 Studios deal.
Committee member Karen MacBeth, a Cumberland Democrat, was announced Tuesday as the new chairwoman.
The panel had been reviewing thousands of pages of documents related to the then-Economic Development Corp. board's approval of a $75 million loan guarantee for Curt Schilling's startup. The agency sued the ex-Red Sox pitcher and others after 38 Studios went bankrupt.
MacBeth has been highly critical of ex-Speaker Gordon Fox on 38 Studios, accusing the leadership of misleading lawmakers. She previously wanted the committee to issue subpoenas for records or witnesses, possibly including former Republican Gov. Don Carcieri.
Former Oversight Chairman Michael Marcello, who challenged Mattiello for the speakership, called that premature.
