State lawmaker's husband pleads guilty in fraud

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The husband of a Rhode Island state lawmaker has pleaded guilty to federal charges of credit card and social security fraud.

Henry Fellela Jr. pleaded guilty on Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Providence. He pleaded to five counts, including identity theft and theft of government funds. Fellela is married to state Rep. Deborah Fellela of Johnston.

Henry Fellela acknowledged in court that he received $58,000 in Social Security benefits after fraudulently listing in his 2004 application that he had no permanent address. The prosecutor said that incorrectly left the impression that he was homeless.

He also acknowledged fraudulently using a credit card to purchase a 55-inch television, clothing and gas.

Fellela faces a maximum 37 years in prison. His sentencing was scheduled for July 1.
