PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — State health officials say the remains of eight people have been removed from a Providence funeral home after the agency received a report that the remains were being stored improperly.

The state has ordered the funeral home to cease operations. Arthur Pennine, owner of the facility, died on Monday. The Rhode Island Department of Health said six bodies and the cremated remains of two other people were removed from the home on Friday and taken to the state medical examiner's office, where officials planned to confirm the identities and contact family members.

Police were also notified.
