PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — An Indiana school superintendent has apologized to Providence Mayor Angel Taveras for copying an open letter Taveras wrote.

The Journal & Courier of Lafayette, Ind. reports that Benton Community School Superintendent Destin Haas wrote an open letter during Teacher Appreciation Week in May that contained language identical to a letter Taveras wrote to local teachers in 2012.

Taveras' letter relates how an elementary school teacher encouraged him to succeed.

The newspaper found two other instances when Haas wrote letters containing the unattributed writings of others.

Haas tells the newspaper that he writes most of his district communications based on examples he finds in books and an email listserv. He says that any plagiarism was unintentional.

A spokesman for Taveras says Haas emailed the mayor on Tuesday to apologize.
