PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A 23-year-old gang member has taken the stand to defend himself against murder conspiracy charges in the death of a 12-year-old girl.
Luis "Fat Boy" Gonzalez testified Monday that he was unaware that Branden Castro, another member of the Harriet Street gang, planned to fire into a crowd at a birthday party last June 15 until it was too late to stop him.
Aynis Vargas Felix was shot to death. Three women with her were shot but survived.
Prosecutors allege that Gonzalez and four other gang members went to the Hartford Housing Project that night seeking revenge for the killing of a friend.
Two men, including Castro, have entered guilty pleas. Gonzalez's lawyers rested their case after his testimony. The trial is set to resume on Wednesday.
