PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A federal judge has approved a request to postpone until after the Sept. 9 primary the deposition of Mayor Angel Taveras in a lawsuit the city filed against its longtime actuary.
Taveras' deposition had been scheduled for Aug. 19. But the city filed a motion asking the judge to delay it and limit it to three hours because of the Democratic primary and city business. Taveras is running for governor.
The Providence Journal reports Wednesday that Magistrate Judge Lincoln Almond found the city showed good cause to delay and limit the questioning.
Providence sued Buck Consultants in 2013 over what it called "fundamental and inexcusable errors" in calculating the projected savings from its pension overhaul. It says Buck overstated the liability by $10.8 million.
Taveras is running against Treasurer Gina Raimondo and newcomer Clay Pell.
