PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Three men have been charged in connection with the fatal beating of a convicted sex offender in Providence.

Sixty-eight-year-old Milton Lyles was found beaten in front of 315 Broad Street on May 19 and died at Rhode Island Hospital on June 13. The autopsy found Lyles' death was due to the assault. Police ruled it a homicide, the eighth in Providence this year.

Providence police said Friday they arrested 20-year-old Jared Jackson and 22-year-old Thomas Rose. They are charged with the murder of Lyles.

Thirty-one-year-old David Durrett was arrested and charged with larceny for allegedly taking a cellphone and money from Lyles' pockets.

It is not clear if the men have attorneys.

Lyles lived near the crime scene. Police and court records show he was a registered sex offender with criminal records in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
