WARWICK, R.I. (AP) — State officials say two excavators remain stuck in wetlands near T.F. Green Airport and the contractor will have to build a short rock road to get them out.

A report by the Department of Environmental Management obtained by WPRI-TV says one of the excavators toppled into an area near Buckeye Brook on Aug. 5, as Cardi Corp. crews worked on a $40 million runway safety project. The second excavator got stuck trying to remove the first one.

Officials say both excavators slipped off mats that weren't designed for the machines' weight.

It's not clear how long it will take to build the rock road and remove the heavy machinery.

The Buckeye Brook Coalition says the stuck excavators add to its concerns about the runway project damaging the environment.
