BOSTON (AP) — Backers of two high-profile casino proposals are weighing their next moves after the projects were rejected by voters in local referendums.
In Palmer, supporters of Mohegan Sun's proposed $1 billion resort casino plan to ask for a recount after a referendum on Tuesday failed by less than 100 votes out of about 5,200 cast. A spokeswoman for a pro-casino group says the Massachusetts Gaming Commission will also be asked to investigate whether any "outside influences" affected the vote.
A proposal to build a $1 billion casino at the Suffolk Downs race track was defeated Tuesday in East Boston but approved by voters in the neighboring city of Revere. Backers are now looking into the possibility of moving the project entirely into Revere in an effort to keep it alive.
