WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) _ Westerly officials are set to begin mediation talks with lawyers for a quarry facing complaints about noise and dust.
The Westerly Sun reports the mediation is scheduled to begin Wednesday between town officials and lawyers for Copar Quarries and Westerly Granite Co., which leases the land to Copar.
Residents of the Bradford section of town and nearby Charlestown say noise from heavy equipment at the quarry is unbearable and they're worried about the health effects of stone dust that drifts onto their properties.
Westerly Town Manager Steven Hartford says the town can't do much because state officials continue to allow Copar to operate and the company has never been found in violation of the town's noise ordinance.
Several court cases involving the quarry remain pending, including lawsuits by neighbors.
