CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — Cranston police are crediting an 11-year-old boy for getting help to his father and younger brother after their kayak capsized on the Pawtuxet River.
Police say the youngster climbed the banks of the river on Saturday to get help for his father, 50-year-old John Barnett, and the youngster's 3-year-old brother who were swept down the rapidly moving river.
The child said his kayak also overturned.
Cranston police and fire officials and state police and state environmental officials organized a search and found Barnett and his son off Route 95 and Route 37. The father and son made it to the shoreline and flagged down a passing motorist.
