Protesters Demand Departure Of Sex Offender

(Providence, RI)  --  Residents have found the new home of an ill-famed registered sex offender in Providence, and they want him to leave.  Richard Gardner spent nearly 30 years in prison for the kidnapping and sexual assault of several boys in Rhode Island and Massachusetts before being recently released.  He registered with the Providence Police Department last Friday but because his conviction predates Megan's Law, his address wasn't made public.  Still, residents of the Washington Park area of the city were able to learn that Gardner had moved in to their neighborhood, and following a community meeting, they held a protest outside of his home last night.  Major David Lapatin of the Providence Police Department said there will be officers posted to keep an eye on Gardner.
