State Rep-Elect Won't Take Seat After Mailer Controversy

(Warren, RI)  --  The incoming state representative who faced backlash for faking an invoice so he could claim he sent out a campaign mailer is deciding to step down before his inauguration.  Laufton Ascencao said earlier this week that he committed to send out a mailer in support of Democratic candidates in Warren, but he ran out of time and lied about having sent out the mailer.  The state representative-elect initially said he still planned to be sworn in to his House District 68 seat, but Ascencao changed his mind yesterday.  There is already interest being expressed by candidates for a special election.
