National Grid, Gas Supplier Differ On Outage Cause

(Newport, RI)  --  National Grid is disputing the claims being made by the operator of the natural gas transmission line regarding the cause of this week's gas outage impacting customers mostly in Newport.  A statement from the Canadian company Enbridge, which operates the Algonquin Gas Transmission Line, indicates the cold snap we experienced earlier led to an unusually high demand for gas for heating, which caused the disruption, according to a report from The Providence Journal.  But National Grid says a faulty valve on the Algonquin line in Massachusetts caused a drop in pressure, which caused the utility to initiate a shutdown out of safety concerns.  Governor Gina Raimondo promised a thorough review to find out what caused the outage during a press conference yesterday.
