Court Decision Awarding Ownership Of Newport Synagogue Will Stand

(Newport, RI)--The U.S. Supreme Court is passing on reviewing a dispute over ownership of a place of worship in Newport.The Newport Daily News reports the co-presidents of Congregation Jeshuat Israel have written a letter to members of the Touro Synagogue informing them that the SCOTUS decision allows a federal appeals court ruling to award ownership to Congregation Shearith Israel of New York City to stand.That decision was based on an agreement between the congregations from over a century ago.The legal dispute began when Touro announced plans in 2012 to sell off sets of decorative bells to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
