Former State Senator Sentenced For Engaging In Check-Kiting Scheme

(Providence, RI)--A former Rhode Island state senator is being sentenced to two years in federal prison for bank fraud and tax crimes.The U.S. Department of Justice says James Doyle of Pawtucket engaged in a 74-million-dollar check-kiting scheme in which he wrote tens of thousands of worthless checks.Doyle pleaded guilty to charges last September.As part of his sentence, he must pay nearly half-a-million dollars of restitution to three banks where he held accounts through which the scheme allegedly operated.
