State House Passes Sex Abuse Statute Of Limitations Extension Bill

(Providence, RI)--A bill extending the statute of limitations for childhood sexual abuse has been passed by the Rhode Island House.Representative Carol Hagan McEntee's bill extends the time period for sex abuse claims to 35 years for victims starting at the age of 18, which is five times as long as the current length. The bill also enables victims to file suit up to seven years from the time a victim discovers or remembers the abuse having taken place through means such as therapy. The Rhode Island Senate Judiciary Committee was set to vote on its own version of the bill on Thursday, but WPRI-TV reports the committee decided to hold it for further study after criticism over the bill not including the discovery provision.
