There’s no spanking in Sterling K. Brown’s household. The “This is Us” star and his wife,Ryan Michelle Bathe, decided to abandon the practice with their two boys, eight-year-old Andrew and three-year-old Amaré.
Ryan wrote about their decision in an essay for People magazine. She said that she remembers “crying while nursing my welts after being whipped” as a child “and hearing, ‘Stop crying or I’ll really give you something to cry about.’” But after reading articles about discipline and science around corporal punishment, she and Sterling made the decision to stop spanking their children.
It hasn’t been easy. “When you’ve been raised a certain way, divorcing yourself from everything you know makes learning something new extremely difficult,” Ryan said. She also admitted that Andrew isn’t afraid of them – something she doesn’t know how to handle. But “we continue forward,” she said. “Praying for guidance. Hoping that love will be enough.”
