South Kingstown Police Issued Guidance After Trespassing Arrest

(South Kingstown, RI)--South Kingstown police officers are being given new guidance as part of the longstanding issue of access to the shoreline and the rights of property owners. This comes after a Charlestown resident was arrested earlier this year for trespassing while collecting seaweed on a beach in front of private property.According to a report from The Providence Journal, the new guidance instructs officers to generally not make arrests on-site when getting a trespassing complaint; instead, they are to educate people about potentially being on private land.Information will be forwarded to the town solicitor, and charges could possibly be filed later.
