Release Of Wyatt Prisoner Stayed By Appeals Court

(Boston, MA)--A temporary stay of a Rhode Island federal judge's ordered release of an accused Dominican Republic murder suspect was granted yesterday. The Providence Journal reports the U.S. Appeals Court in Boston granted the stay after the federal government appealed Judge John McConnell's order to not extradite Cristian Aguasvivas and to release him from the Wyatt Detention Center.McConnell's order stemmed from a Board of Immigration Appeals opinion that Aguasvivas, who is accused of murdering a law enforcement officer in the DR, would be tortured by police if he is returned, making the extradition a treaty violation.
