State Supreme Court Upholds Conviction In SWAT Officer Assault Case

(Providence, RI)--The Rhode Island Supreme Court is upholding a conviction against a South County man stemming from a standoff with authorities in 2014.Michael Neugent of Hope Valley was sentenced to five years in prison for the felony assault of a SWAT team member that had entered his residence after the standoff started. The Supreme Court says the trial justice in the Superior Court case that resulted in Neugent's conviction did not err by denying him a motion for a new trial.Neugent maintained in his appeal that he acted in self-defense because he did not know the individuals coming inside were police.
