Providence City Council Meeting Tonight Includes Defunding Police Request

(Providence, RI)--The Providence City Council Finance Committee is planning to meet tonight to discuss requests for defunding the Providence Police Department.Similar calls are being made across the U.S. and especially in Minneapolis, where a police officer is facing a murder charge for causing the death of George Floyd during a recent arrest.Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza said in a statement his administration is currently exploring "re-allocating resources" to best respond to community needs, but didn't use the word "defund".Reports indicate a budget hearing virtually hosted by the finance committee last night was "Zoom-bombed" by multiple people who called in and shouted racist slurs and other offensive language.
