Issue Taken With 'Plantation' Part Of Rhode Island's Name

(Providence, RI)--The official state name of Rhode Island is once again being brought up as a problem in light of racial tensions in the U.S.The official name is Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, and it's the "plantation" part that people are taking issue with. One person calling for the removal of Plantations told The Boston Globe at a rally in Providence before a City Council committee meeting to discuss defunding the police on Wednesday, that the word conjures up images of slavery, even though the word was only meant to indicate a colony or settlement at the time. There are several online petitions that have been set up to request the state remove the word.
