Civilian Named Providence Police Major

(Providence, RI) -- Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza is facing questions about the appointment of the city's recreation director as a police major despite his lack of law enforcement experience. Michael Stephens has been named the Providence Police Department's first community relations and diversion services major. Providence City Council President John Igliozzi says while Stephens has a commendable record of community leadership and service in the recreation department, it doesn't qualify him for the police major position. Igliozzi said the council and Elorza should work together to change the job title to clarify that it is a civilian position.
