Infrastructure, Public Safety Keys To Providence Mayor's Last Budget

The Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza is out with his 567 million dollar budge for the next fiscal year. It will be his last as mayor. He is term limited.

The Mayor says the it is a fiscally responsible spending plan that follows through on his continued support for infrastructure, public safety and quality of life issues that are facing residents.

“Over the past seven years, my administration has prioritized strong financial stewardship, building our reserves and meeting our fiscal responsibilities all while continuing to provide increased programming and services for our City's residents and visitors," said Mayor Jorge O. Elorza. "This proposed budget builds on the investments we have made over the past seven years and continues that great work. As we all prepare to pass the baton to the next generation of city leaders, I am excited to see the new and unexpected directions that they will take our city."

The plan includes 1 point 5 million dollars for the city to hire 50 new police officers.

5 million dollars will go to the Superman Building project.

The plan also includes a lowering of property taxes by about 25 percent. But although the rate will see a drop of about 6 dollars, properties have been re-valuated throughout the city and that will mean the city will be able to collect more tax revenues.

The city council will get the spending plan next and hold hearings on the measure.
