State Legislature Perpares For New Year

The Rhode Island General Assembly is opening its 2023 session on Tuesday, January 3rd.

The House of Representatives and Senate are scheduled to meet in their respective chambers at 4 p.m.

In accordance with the state constitution, the senior representative from Newport, Marvin Abney, will preside until the election of a new House speaker.

Joseph Shekarchi has been endorsed to continue the role by the Democratic Caucus.

Likewise, Senate President Dominick Ruggerio has been endorsed for another term.

Among the first major things the legislative body will have to tackle is a new budget which Governor McKee has been working on for the last couple of weeks.

The Senate will be temporarily presided over by Dawn Euer of Newport and Jamestown.
