Mayor's Goal: Have The Best Run City In The Nation

Brett Smiley is the new mayor of Providence.

Smiley, a Democrat, was sworn in on Monday to become the 39th mayor in the history of the Rhode Island capital city.

The inauguration ceremony was at the Providence Public Library.

The Mayor says it his goal is to run the city so it is the best in the nation. And, to help achieve that he plans to introduce Pre-K classes for all in the city as well as to improve affordable housing options.

Smiley's husband, Jim DeRentis, became the first-ever "first gentleman" in Providence history.

The mayor focused in his inauguration speech on rebuilding the public school system.
