Mayor: Illegal Dirt Bikes Have No Place In City

It's one of the top "quality of life" issues that people talk about the city and it causes a danger to motorists and pedestrians alike. Illegal dirtbikes and ATVs.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley and police chief Oscar Perez announced a new effort to crack down on those activities. Smiley said the vehicles do not belong on city streets.

The tactics will include undercover police work and monitoring of social media.

While the city has destroyed confiscated ATVs and dirt bikes in the past, Smiley said officials will explore all options.

The mayor did say that he was willing to work with legal bike riders- to find some place safe and legal to ride- but he said he would have a hard time doing that in such a busy city.

Meantime, a tip line has been established to report non-emergency information about the illegal activity at 401-680-8288.
